It’s not just like any monday

It has been quite a ride… Time to give you all an update! I have been freelancing for almost three and a half years. Half a year ago I was asked to join Fonk, a mobile agency from Amsterdam, as a partner. When I started everything felt pretty good so I decided to pause my own company and become part of Fonk. But because we didn’t want to to rush into anything we decided to start a trial period. During this trial we went to Cape Town South Africa to meet the developers Fonk works with, they have quite some good developers over there. The development standards are much higher than I expected. But I also found out Cape Town is a great place to be! :-)

I was in Cape Town when I made the decision stop working for Fonk. I really liked the challenge of managing the projects. But I missed the hands-on work and the company was not going in the directions I wanted it to go. It was a really hard decision and it may sound pretty weird, but I think the passing of Steve Jobs helped me to make a decision. When he died I spend time reading stories about the things he said, that’s when I read this:

You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

That’s why I decided I wanted to go back to work on my own projects in Januari 2012!

When I told my good friends Eric Paul and Timo that I was going to quit working at Fonk, we got talking on what we really wanted to do for a living. We all got really excited on the idea of building the apps we need ourselves. After a few brainstorm sessions we felt that we had plenty of good ideas for web, mobile and desktop applications. That’s why 2012 will be the year of our startup. That’s why this monday isn’t like any other monday. Starting today I will try to work as much as I can on our shared passion!
